working with old photographs and collage.

here a few pictures of my sketchbook, experimenting with old family photography and collage. 

  layering up different papers to see what effects i can create.

making yarn wrappings by selecting the colour and arranging the yarns proportionally.

 i carried on the lines found in the photographs to create stripes and checks.

i really enjoy working with photographs. old and new. but there's something about old photos that make me excited. maybe it's the stories associated with them that i will never know, but will just have to guess in my head. i don't know where the place is in the picture, nor the people in them. i just know they're my family.

embroidery hoops.

i have been embroidery for the last two days and forgot how much I LOVE IT. i've been working in embroidery hoops as i find them convenient and neat to work with stitch. the embroidery hoop also keeps work flat and tight and allows you to add much more detail to hand stitching. it's also good to use them on the sewing machine and you can embroider freely without sewing your finger... i have had to learn to be patient!

i thought that as well as working alongside landscapes and nature, i could experiment with my photographs of people; who are after all organic.

i initially played with sticking buttons over peoples faces, translating this into a drawing and then embroidering. but realised that i had to focus on this three week project rather than trying to look and manipulate every photo i've ever taken. i need to focus and sustain projects better! stop trying to do everything emily!

i take photographs all the time. not 'good' ones, but i document the places i go, what i see, what i do, people i'm with and the general things that stick out and interest me the most. alot of my photos are of natural places; the countryside, the beach, rivers, parks etc. most being photographed from the car or train window. as i have chosen natural and organic as my theme; i have got together i range of my photos to work into; stitch, knit, collage and paint - to experiment and produce mixed media work.
