ba2, project 2, breif.

This project is about the creative re-invention, re-cycling and up-cycling of materials.
You will be set a task and asked to select a theme or concept as a starting point for your visual research and investigation. The task is aimed at encouraging experimental thinking and making, whilst helping you to develop research skills, your visual language and workshop skills and will help you to more clearly identify your particular area of interest. I have no idea what my theme should be yet... i have been making things from pillow cases... what can you do with a pillow case? hahah.

You will be asked to explore how the ordinary can become extraordinary and beautiful through your re-cycled materials manipulation.
This project requires you to build on and develop the skills you have acquired in previous projects. I will be focusing on stitch and print. They are what i'm most passionate in and enjoy the most.
You will explore a range of different processes including construction / deconstruction / reconstruction through drawing, photography and material manipulation. You will be encouraged to extend your outside influences and are required to look for inspiration from historical and contemporary sources including designers, artists, painters, illustrators etc.

This project addresses the key areas of study as follows:
Studio Practice: For this project you will be asked to select a concept/theme to inform your visual research and the materials and methods of working. You will be encouraged to source materials and information from outside of the University College. You will be involved in building on and developing your practical skills in textile workshops of your choice including knit, weave, stitch, print, digital practices and related workshops and encouraged to make effective use of the studio space. Your experimental sampling and documentation of workshop practice forms part of the research and evidences an engagement with the textile workshops in the exploration of your chosen themes.

Personal Development and Planning: You will continue to use your reflective journal to document your learning and you will be supported in your learning with a group session where you consider different aspects of reflective practice. This blog is where i mainly reflect my work, i do write in my sketch books - but this is much easier to summarise and read again and again.

'For this project you will be given a task that will challenge you to create as wide and
exciting a range of different stripes and checks as possible. You should consider
working in as broad a range of materials as possible including, different papers,
plastics, foils etc. You will be required to be creative and experimental in your approach and to build upon the knowledge you have gained during the last unit extending your skills from the workshops you have had in print, stitch and knit. You will also be expected to explore your personal ideas in relation to a variety of contexts.
You will create work that is informed by primary as well as secondary visual and textual research including: drawing, colour, photography, inspiration from other designers, artists, painters, illustrators etc. You will produce experimental sampling that evidences an engagement with the constructed textile workshops in the exploration of your ideas and practice.'

Norwich Castle Museum Study Visit
The Decorative Arts Gallery Collections

During week one your job is to visually explore and investigate and become familiar with the objects in the decorative arts collections.
During week two your job will be to research an object or a collection of objects and continue to make drawings of your chosen objects. There will be an object surgery on Monday 25th October/drawing tutorials.
During week three you will be required to bring your ideas together into 3 finished drawings/designs around a collection. Details about this will be discussed at a later time.

YOUR JOB IS TO:

Spend time in the gallery and become familiar with the broad range of objects on display
Read the information provided – note dates, any stories/narratives, political references, historical and social references to pattern, design, maker.  This will help you to begin to identify what interests you about the object or collection of objects and provide you with initial information for research.

YOUR JOB IS TO:

Investigate/Enquire.
Look.
See.
Record and document visually (drawing) and in writing (note taking)
Put in place strategies to help you LOOK, SEE, ENQUIRE, INVESTIGATE – viewfinders, ant, butterfly etc.
Make rules – 5/10 minute drawings, drawing in continuous line, etc

When making your drawings you need to consider:

Composition - working along an edge, across an edge/page, mask areas off etc.
Application of colour- linear, block, textural etc.
Shadows - light/dark
Tracings.
Scale – Miniature, large scale etc
Record detail of object, shapes, negatives/positives, textures/smooth, etc.
we will only know the final outcome a week before hand in, so we don't limit our creativity to the final piece.

i have chosen the delftware china and tiles.

sat nav the city.

'sat nav the city' visual research project. ba1. project 1a.

for the first project, we got given a general visual research project to get to know the city of norwich. they're looking at how we visualise a subject in which we've been given. for instance, this project was so broad you could literally look at ANYTHING in the city. which was a bit daunting at first, but it's interesting to see what everybody chooses and how diverse some of the responses are.

we have been set a series of tasks aimed at helping to develop our own visual language. by looking at themes such as composition, use of colour and mark making we can explore our ideas in drawing workshops, to then develop our drawings to take into the print workshop.

one of the first tasks we had to do was choose several areas of the city to explore. i initially ventured down st benedicts street, but ended up at tomblands and eventually at the cathedral. i felt that norwich is known for it's numerous churches and the castle and cathedral so it's not a bad place to start.

i then took photographs and made a series of drawings in my sketch book focusing on;
- texture and surface
-pattern decoration and ornamentation
- colour and form
